A behind-the-scenes look at the craftsmanship shaping ceramic design
Members of our Environment Design team recently travelled to Italy with our friends at Solus, enjoying an inspiring few days exploring beautiful Bologna, Modena and Reggio Emilia.
A highlight of the trip was a visit to Ceramiche Refin, one of the world's largest independently owned ceramic tile manufacturers. From raw materials and advanced production processes to design development and latest collections, the team gained a fascinating insight into how creativity, innovation and craftsmanship combine to produce exceptional ceramic design.
Exploring the design laboratories, museum and exhibition spaces offered a behind-the-scenes look at how concepts inspired by natural textures and materials are transformed into distinctive tile collections. It was an inspiring opportunity to experience the artistry and expertise behind every stage of the process.
The visit concluded at the stunning Refin Villa, providing the perfect setting to reflect on a memorable and insightful experience.
The team also visited Florim Ceramiche, where innovation, sustainability and design excellence were evident throughout. Touring the highly automated manufacturing facilities, precision cutting processes, immersive showrooms and extensive gallery spaces offered a deeper appreciation of the technology and craftsmanship behind each collection.
Highlights included exploring the product testing laboratories, discovering collections influenced by natural materials and Italian design, and learning about Florim's commitment to sustainability through pioneering recycled materials and environmentally conscious manufacturing. It was an inspiring look at a company continuing to push the boundaries of ceramic design.
The experience concluded with a visit to Cleto Chiarli winery, where the team discovered the heritage and traditions behind one of the region's most celebrated wine producers.
In their downtime, the team embraced Italian culture, wandering through the colourful streets and iconic porticoes of Bologna, enjoying the region's renowned cuisine, and visiting the Gavina showroom designed by celebrated Italian architect Carlo Scarpa.
