Huge congratulations to the winners of the Retail Design World Student Awards, announced by our Creative Director, David Dalziel, at Retail Design Expo 2015.

Victoria Blizzard of Nottingham Trent University won the John Lewis category and has been awarded paid work placements both at John Lewis and here at Dalziel and Pow. The John Lewis brief called for students to create a home electronics department in a real space in the company’s Oxford Street store. Victoria’s solution was a ‘deconstructed house’ that used partial room sets to demonstrate products in a natural and flexible way, highlighting how modern devices can link to one another and be used in multiple locations. The judges were impressed with her creative approach, and by how thoroughly worked out and presented it was. We look forward to Victoria joining our team.

The winning entry for Ted Baker was by Zoe Baker of Kingston University. The brief called for entrants to create an ‘unexpecTED’ retail environment in any London location. Zoe envisioned a brand collaboration with board game Monopoly that would see Ted Baker pop-up stores in oversized green houses and red hotels, located in streets across London that feature in the game. Judges loved the big idea behind her design, and the way she followed it through in an execution that was bold, fun and, most importantly, completely on-brand.

Students from four colleges took part in the contest. Those from Northumbria University and Nottingham Trent University tackled a brief set by John Lewis, while Ted Baker set the brief for Kingston University and Ravensbourne students. The entrants were mentored by David Dalziel, along with Kim Morris of JLP, Fitch’s Tim Greenhalgh, and Craig Smith of Ted Baker. Work by shortlisted entrants was judged by a panel that included Design Industry Consultant Lynda Relph-Knight, Portland Brands’ Creative Director Katie Greenyer, David Hurren of Household Design, Browns’ Fashion VM Director Joanna Galannis, Howard Sullivan of Your Studio, Joe Keating of Checkland Kindleysides, Pete Champion of I-AM and Retail Design World Editor Matthew Valentine.
