Back in March, OFFF Festival, one of the biggest motion design festivals in the world, put out an exciting call for submissions for animations to be projected onto the iconic Dissney Building during the motion festival in Barcelona in May.
We were thrilled for our submission to be selected and it was showcased during the Festival last week in Barcelona! Did you spot it?
How we responded to the brief
After brainstorming internally at D&P, we knew we needed to respond in a way that felt truly us.
In a world where everything can feel a bit stressful and unpredictable, we wanted to take the opportunity to inject a little magic, spread positivity, and brighten the days of the festival go-ers. And so an idea was born.
What brings you joy?
We crafted our entry with the question “What brings you joy?” in mind, and asked everyone in our Dalziel & Pow London studio to submit one thing that brings them joy - Whether that be food, colours, an object, an activity, or something else.
We received over 50 submissions and a whole range of answers from the team; from ice cream, to espresso martinis, to disco, to crumpets!
We then took these lovely joyful moments and turned them into gumball-like balls (bubbles of joy if you will!), each representing something that brings joy to someone in the studio. Next, we brought these to life, animating them to dynamically fill the space, bouncing off each other and the beautiful architectural design of the Disseny Hub building to the beat of the music.
Breathing life into the animation
Working with the reference template of the Dissney Hub Building that OFFF provided, we crafted the building template in Cinema 4D, recreating the architecture and shape. We then designed multiple cylinders for the ‘bubbles of joy’, which we later filled with images and illustrations representing the individual responses from the D&P team.
We added dynamics onto each cylinder and also onto the building, to simulate realistic and energetic collisions of the balls and pulses to the beat. Once we had nailed the movement, we added the textures and rendered the whole thing out, ready for projection mapping.
The result? A playful, vibrant and colourful scene, bursting with JOY!
We were so proud that our animation was selected to be projected during the Festival and injected just a little bit more joy into the days of the festival go-ers.
