Farmopolis, a floating oasis

Straight from checking out the new Tate Modern Switch House extension last week, we headed further along the Thames to The Jetty off North Greenwich. Farmopolis is a greenhouse experimental project – a small oasis in what struck us to be a bit of a soulless toy-town area.

From the people behind Wilderness festival and Borough Market Hall, this café, bar, cinema and event space aims to transform the jetty into a hub of creativity and wellbeing. Despite its appearance from the walk up it proved to be a fun, bright (warm!), nicely designed makeshift venue. In retrospect however we’d prefer to have swapped our morning coffees there for afternoon Aperols.

Ticking all the eco boxes, you can adopt a plant, bring yours in for some rehab or use the waterless loos. Future green plans include hydroponic farming, sustainable innovations and farm-to-table restaurants. For details of goings-on, to include flower pressing, yoga sessions and talks by the School of Life, see their events page.

Get there via the Emirates skyline for views of the O2, Antony Gormley’s Quantum Cloud and the new Thames ‘beach’ at the Victoria Docks.
