This weekend I took my mum along to Alice’s Adventures Underground, for her birthday, an immersive experience by theatre company Les Enfants Terribles.
Knowing very little about the production other than the fantasy of the story itself (I have fond memories of watching it on VHS at my Nan & Popa’s) we pre-purchased our drinks vouchers (corks) for the tea party, and headed in.
Once you have ‘fallen’ down the rabbit hole, which in itself is done with fantastic visual effect, you have to decide whether to eat to grow or drink to shrink which subsequently ends up in you being dividing in to suits of cards (small groups). I was a spade.
You are then fully immersed in Alice’s world, meeting the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, attending the Mad hatters tea party and participating in the royal court amongst others things. At the end you can mingle with all the characters in the Queens gardens where there is a bar, live music, food stalls, flamingo croquet, and a maze. We did end up in an interesting conversation with the Dodo about how it was my Mum’s actual birthday whereas it was everyone elses un-birthday . . . they posed for a photo to celebrate both.
It’s full of visual effects, illusions, acrobatics, puppetry and theatre, all in a warren of a set which is simple but incredibly effective with a brilliant attention to detail.
